Winter Meeting 13 January 2012

FICS Winter Meeting for students, supervisors and mentors is both about Working life after the dissertation, and Research achievements of FICS students. Welcome everybody!

Location: Ravintola Domus, Hietaniemenkatu 14, Helsinki.

Regarding working life after the dissertation, we have presentations from a very relevant SHOK (Strategic center for Science, Technology and Innovation) namely SalWe and from two well established and fast growing startups in the fields of computer science, namely Xtract and Zenrobotics. These collaborators will outline their views on how should one prepare for the working life: which skills and networks to acquire. Also, as these companies are topically very close to FICS, we will hear details on what they work on. In addition, two FICS alumni members Niko Vuokko and Petteri Hintsanen share their views on the same topic.

Regarding research achievements of FICS students, we have contributed talks, 2 min spotlight presentations, and posters. The supervisors, mentors and fellow FICS students are warmly encouraged to give feedback to all students!

To facilitate the information flow, the students are kindly asked to bring a POSTER. Alternatively you can bring a computer demo using your own equipment, or volunteer to give a talk, either a 2 min spotlight presentation, or a full 20 min talk.

Let us put special emphasis on presenting one's research in a clear and understandable manner! Remember that your mentor/mentors and fellow FICS students are not strictly from the same field as you are. Try to answer the question "Why should a new person be interested in me and my research?" To this end, please prepare a 30-second "elevator pitch" (in Finnish, "hissipuhe") in which you summarize the main points of your research in a convincing and easily reachable manner. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elevator_pitch

About the posters: The poster stands are of size 95 cm x 160 cm. Pay attention to the clarity of the presentation: font size, amount of text, using figures etc.

About the spotlight presentations: It should be 2 minutes and have 3 slides only (one title slide, one giving the content of your work, and one describing what others should learn from you). The presentation should clearly bring out "why is this interesting?".  Most preferably, the spotlight could be accompanied by your POSTER later in the poster session. If you do not have a poster with you, we will in any case assign a named poster slot for you, as this makes it easier for the mentors to find you. Then please at least bring a research plan that you can discuss with your mentor/mentors. However, the poster would be very welcome.

About the full 20 min talks: Please contact fics-coordinator@hiit.fi in advance to reserve a slot.

The event is free of charge to FICS students, supervisors and mentors. The travel expenses of students living outside Helsinki region will be reimbursed by FICS. Please contact fics-coordinator@hiit.fi for details on reimbursing.
