Warning! FICS will close down in the end of 2015. At the moment we do not have funding for courses or research visits anymore.

FICS supports the supervisors in arranging courses and the students in participating in courses and research visits. FICS has some funding available for these activities; for details on how to apply see below. Complementing of the funding from other sources is recommended. See also a list of other funding sources in the News and Activities page.

PROGRAMME FOR COURSE ORGANIZATION

FICS provides both broader courses and topical courses, and summer schools. FICS supervisors can apply for funding for organizing courses that are open for all FICS students. Funding decisions, covering part of the event budget, are based on the suitability of the topic to FICS students; interdisciplinarity and computational topics are preferred.  To apply for funding, please send email to fics-coordinator@hiit.fi with the following information:

  • the name, date and place of the course
  • the person and the institution in charge of organizing the course, and any collaborators
  • a short description of the scientific content and the target audience of the course
  • the maximum number of participants
  • an estimate of how many FICS students might be interested in participating to the course, or alternatively a list of supervisors whose students are the main target audience; please see the list of FICS supervisors
  • do FICS students get some special benefits such as free attendance
  • how does the course advance interdisciplinarity and the synergy of computational methods between fields of FICS, including new "future" computational sciences
  • preliminary rough budget, including contribution from other funding sources, and the amount of money applied for from FICS
  • when do you need to know the funding decision

PROGRAMME FOR COURSE/CONFERENCE PARTICIPATION

The students of FICS can apply for funding for covering part of the registration fee and traveling and housing expenses. Daily allowances (päiväraha, per diem) will unfortunately not be covered by FICS. Funding decisions are based on the suitability and centrality of the course/conference to your doctoral studies; interdisciplinarity and computational topics are preferred. To apply for funding, please send email to fics-coordinator@hiit.fi with the following information:

  • your supervisor's comments on why this course/conference is particularly useful for you
  • the name, date and place of the course/conference
  • the person and the institution in charge of organizing the event
  • the name of your supervisor and his/her capability of covering part of the funding
  • a short description of the scientific content of the event, and how does it relate to your doctoral thesis
  • how does your participation in the event advance interdisciplinarity and the synergy of computational methods between fields of FICS, including new "future" computational sciences
  • preliminary rough budget, including contribution from other funding sources, and the amount of money applied for from FICS
  • when do you need to know the funding decision

VISITING PROGRAMME

FICS strongly encourages interdisciplinarity and internationality of studies and research. A 6 month visit abroad is encouraged, and it can comprise of a few separate visits if preferred. The students can apply for funding covering part of the costs of visits central to their doctoral work. Funding decisions are based on the suitability and centrality of the visit with respect to your doctoral studies; interdisciplinarity and computational topics are preferred. It might be a good idea to apply for partial funding from a foundation as those are often willing to cover research visits abroad, and thus in the optimal case, there would be no costs left for the supervisor. To apply for funding, please send email to fics-coordinator@hiit.fi with the following information:

  • where you will be visiting and when, and for how long
  • the person or research group and the institution where you will visit
  • the name of your supervisor and his/her capability of covering your salary during the visit, and part of the other expenses
  • the current status of your doctoral thesis and the role of the visit in it
  • how does your visit advance interdisciplinarity and the synergy of computational methods between the fields of FICS, including new "future" computational sciences
  • preliminary rough budget, including contribution from other funding sources, and the amount of money applied for from FICS
  • when do you need to know the funding decision
