FICS started in January 2010 as a multidisciplinary initiative, combining together the core methodological topics and important application areas of computational sciences:
(1) Computational Statistics and Information Technology
(2) Numerical and Applied Mathematics
(3) Computational Physics
(4) Computational Biology
(5) Future Computational Sciences (economics, medicine, agriculture, humanities, ecology, neuroscience etc.)
The existing graduate school ComBi was merged into FICS as of January 1, 2010.
Director of FICS: Professor Samuel Kaski, Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT, Aalto University School of Science
Coordinator of FICS: Dr. Ella Bingham, Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT, Aalto University School of Science
FICS is coordinated at Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT which is a joint institute of Aalto University and University of Helsinki.
The steering group works with the director in planning and executing annual action plans and budgets. It decides on the student application review process and student admissions. Each of the five fields of FICS is represented in the Steering group, with an extra representative from the ComBi graduate school.
All students have a computational sciences expert as a supervisor, and usually also a supervisor in the application field. If your supervisor is not listed in the board of advisors, contact a member of the board of advisors before making the application. An preliminary list of other potential supervisors is here.
The individual departments at universities are the basic units of education. The universities grant the degrees, and they are the employers of the students.
University of Tampere, Institute of Medical Technology
Lappeenranta University of Technology, Department of Mathematics and Physics
University of Turku, Department of Mathematics
The Strategic Committee of FICS represents the main partner and co-operating organizations, including industry and graduate schools. It makes strategic motions in particular about collaboration.
